We follow a "only what is needed" principle: collection stays within what features require, the experience improvement program can be turned off, and synced content is used for syncing only, never for advertising.
What is collected
Three categories: data required to run (crash reports, update checks), data for features you enabled (sync, translation requests), and optional experience improvement data you can turn off.

What is not collected
Browsing history and bookmark content are never used for ad targeting. Passwords are stored encrypted and the service cannot read them in plain text.

How to turn it off
In Settings → Privacy and security you can disable the experience improvement program, automatic crash reporting and search suggestions — features keep working.

No. Every feature keeps working; you simply stop sending statistics used to improve the product.
